Remember when I mentioned that I wasn’t going to be running? And remember how I was worried about finding other good cardio workouts? Yeah well, I’ve worked really hard, but I think I’ve found ways to keep cardio fun (which running was NOT fun for me) and get in some awesome workouts.

In the past few weeks I have been working with a trainer and really trying to get things on track. When I took my measurements for the first time, I had accumulated some serious inches (not to mention pounds) from last April, so it was time to really get on board. The first few weeks I was just doing the treadmill and knocking out the time I needed. Sure, I was listening to good music, and day dreaming, and even jogging a little here and there, when it felt right, but nothing special. And then I soon realized if I was going to make this a regular thing in my life (um, you know, like cardio should be!) that I needed to spice it up a bit.
So I started mixing it up with some time on the bike. I still love our bike. I still think NordicTrack customer service is crap. And I was good with that for a bit. And now that the weather had lightened up some, which I say hesitantly because the last week was crap, but I have some more options for outside workouts as well.
Cardio options I’ve tried recently and enjoyed:
- I tried Zumba. I have it on DVD. It’s not as fun privately at home, as it is in a group. But it’s still more exciting than the treadmill some days.
- Just Dance. Oh yes, you would think this wouldn’t be as intense as it is. If you start it, with the intent to work out, not only does an hour fly by before you even notice, but you’ve worked up a huge sweat. Maybe it’s because I’m totally uncoordinated and have to try double hard to do everything, but it rocked off some calories and I felt great.
- I’ve mentioned numerous times how much I love our local metro parks. I’m less impressed with the Cleveland metroparks but I am willing to go there. So I can’t wait to get back in the trails. And with my new bike, I have plans to ride up to peninsula and ride the train home. Both of which will be a first time for me!
- And finally, my newest interest is EA active for the wii. I just picked it up and figured what the heck… so I strapped on the sensors, and got to work. I have a review coming up, but let me say – wow. I was soaked after doing two workouts and had a great time. Today, I’m sore and yet ready to do it again tonight.
I’m not saying these can totally replace treadmill miles, but it most certainly keeps it exciting!
What do you do to keep cardio exciting?
